The activity of the Association Roma Sotterranea

Activity of topographical survey in the subterranean under the Vittoriano. Our work field is the Eternal City. And this is the most challenging as well as the biggest  undiscovered museum of the world. A series of layers, made of debris, buildings, insulae, temples, shrines, etc. one on top of the other, due to changes and developments that happend during the 3.000 years that made Rome the Caput Mundi (the head of the world).

It's not easy to move in this  field: first of all we always have to build contacts with the  archaeological offices in charge of the different areas, then we have to make a plan together on how to act and move  in the undergrounds.
Then practically speaking, safety always comes first:  we have to produce an operative safety plan, taking into consideration every aspect of our activity in the undergrounds and making plans if something will go wrong (luckily it never happened up to now!).
Our exploration needs sometimes ropes or ladders, otherwise the only thing is to crawl, with no fear of getting dirty because of mud or humid soil.
After the exploration a mapping of the place is needeed: with the total station we are able to make a proper drawing, with errors in the reason of few inches.
Obviously a photographic portfolio is most needed, in order to give an idea to the archaeoligists outside of how the place looks like.

Today our main activities are in the Cloaca Maxima, the main sewer in ancient Rome, in the old town of Veio, older than Rome and one of its fierce enemies, Crustumerium, another town even older than Veio, a gallery found under the church of S.Maria in Domnica on the Caelian Hill and new explorations under several churches around town.
